A HISTORY
Machine music reached Britain through the north first. Long before techno had a name, Sheffield and Manchester were already building it out of drum machines, bass and cold rooms — and the towns between them kept it alive. This is the lineage the BlueNote sits in. Press-ready copy: quote it, cut it, keep it.
LATE 1970s
SHEFFIELD
Cabaret Voltaire and The Human League put drum machines and synthesisers at the centre of northern music, years before anyone called it techno.
1988
MANCHESTER
A Guy Called Gerald's 'Voodoo Ray' lands as a UK house landmark and 808 State's early records follow. The Hacienda turns the city into the north's laboratory.
1989
SHEFFIELD
Warp Records is founded. The bleep sound — Sweet Exorcist, Forgemasters, LFO, Nightmares on Wax — strips techno back to bass, space and signal.
1990
ACROSS THE PENNINES
Bleep, house and hardcore travel on pirate radio and white labels. The northern take comes out deeper, colder and funkier than the imported original.
1991–92
RAVE COUNTRY
Warehouse parties in Blackburn and the Leeds–Bradford rave scene take the music out of the clubs and into the fields and mill towns. The north keeps both sides — rave and techno.
1992
LEEDS
The Orbit opens in Morley. For the next decade it is one of the most respected techno rooms in the country, a shrine to the harder European sound.
1990s ONWARD
THE CALDER VALLEY
A Pennine mill town with a ballroom history of its own. The records filling Sheffield warehouses and Leeds basements travelled up the valley too, into halls never built for them.
NOW
TODMORDEN
The BlueNote carries it on in the basement: vinyl and digital on the house rig, a 200-capacity room, residents DJ Covert23, DJ Thunda and DJ Ploz.
“Northern techno was never imported. It was built.”
“Steel city to mill town: the same signal, a colder room.”
“Bleep, bass, and a basement. That's the recipe.”
